Destination BC

Internal Communications & Change Management, Publications
Vancouver, British Columbia

Destination BC engaged Monogram Communications to develop internal Truth and Reconciliation materials that aligned with their brand guidelines and were supported by original illustrations from an Indigenous designer.

The Ask

Destination BC is the official destination marketing organization for British Columbia, responsible for promoting the province as a must-visit tourism destination and supporting local tourism businesses and communities through strategic marketing, partnerships and industry development. Monogram Communications wrote and designed a Truth & Reconciliation Commitment internal publication, Internal Summary Handout, and Presentation Deck to demonstrate their commitment to reconciliation within the organization.

The Approach

Destination BC engaged Monogram to help translate their internal Truth and Reconciliation commitments into clear, accessible materials that could guide staff, leadership and partners. Monogram partnered with two Indigenous creatives to complete this work: a writer from the Takla Nation, and a graphic designer from Nlaka‘pamux First Nation.

They were looking for support to:

  • Clarify and articulate their Truth and Reconciliation commitments in a way that was grounded, respectful and actionable.

  • Create an internal-facing document that aligned with Destination BC’s brand while centring Indigenous perspectives.

  • Ensure the work reflected lived experience, learning and accountability rather than performative or compliance-driven messaging.

  • Support internal understanding of cultural competency, decolonization and respectful growth of Indigenous tourism.

  • Provide a framework staff and Board members could use to guide decisions, behaviours and long-term action.

The Results

Monogram designed each deliverable with adherence to Destination BC’s brand guidelines, enhanced with original illustrations by the Indigenous designer with these core fundamentals in mind.

As a result of this work:

  • Established a clear, shared understanding of what Truth and Reconciliation means within their organization.
  • Created a practical internal resource to guide staff and Board members in their day-to-day work.
  • Shifted focus from symbolic actions to internal learning, systems change and accountability.
  • Strengthened alignment between Destination BC’s tourism mandate and the respectful growth of Indigenous tourism.
  • Set a foundation for ongoing dialogue, learning and action across the organization and with industry partners.
  • Helped ensure Indigenous tourism is supported in ways that respect Indigenous rights, sovereignty and choice.
